Cold Weather and 5 Months Old!!!

John started putting pictures up the first week of December and keeps asking me when I am going to finish it! This is me finishing it. Not very creative, but you'll get the idea. :-)

You may not be able to see past the wet pavement, but if you look closely you can see that it was snowing! Big fluffy flakes that did not last. I believe we got snow before OK this year!

This was the frost on the ground the next morning. By that afternoon it was all gone and I believe it was in the mid 60's.

So We have been trying Sam on solids lately. He does a great job eating! He opens his mouth for the spoon and even helps it in a little. He's just getting so big!

Sam does a pretty good job of holding his head up. He's very strong, and can roll over from his stomach to his back. (He has for a while now)

Of course we have to have a picture of Sam being thrown in the air. That's what Burkinshaw's do! We have gotten good pictures of babies in the air the last few years, however, there are a few more babies and we may not get all of them in the same picture this year.

What can I say....he's a handsome little dude!

Sam is very energetic when John gets home from work. This is what he does when we're eating dinner. He usually faces John because I think he gets tired of looking at me by the end of the day. Enjoy!

Progress Report - Four Months

Sam gets more interesting all the time. He's finally old enough to throw around and still small enough that he can go pretty high. Emily hates it, but Sam loves it. And we really don't get too crazy with it.

We gave Sam his pacifier his first night when we were still in the hospital, and it has always been a great comfort for him. Lately, however, he has discovered that chewing on his fingers is more effective in drool generation and dispersion so he will often discard his pacifier for efficiency's sake.

Sam is getting stronger all the time also. He needs help of course, but he likes to stand up and we catch him straining in his car seat trying to sit up. Our friends the Bergers gave us their Bumpo (they have two girls, which is why it is purple) and Sam is pretty stable sitting in that already too. And he loves watching tv, especially OU or BYU football on weekends or Food Network during the week.

Sam no longer fits in any of his 0-3 month clothes, so I see him in new outfits regularly that we got from baby showers that he now fits into. In fact we went out on Saturday and found him some new church clothes. Pretty stylish, eh?

Emily mentioned in a previous post how difficult it can be to get Sam dressed because he grabs at anything that comes close to his head and tries to stuff it into his mouth. I was getting him dressed this morning and he kept doing that so I couldn't get his arms in and he was laughing at me as I pulled his hands away from him. We weren't quick enough to get all of that on camera, but he was still in kind of a giggly mood afterwards so we got some good laughs on video here.

Speaking of stuffing things into his mouth, Sam was getting a little fussy during Sunday School today so I took him out and decided he could use a diaper change. I put him on the little changing table and when I got his used diaper off I just set it down for a moment up above his head. So of course Sam rolled right over, grabbed the dirty diaper and stuffed it in his face. Fortunately the back side was facing him rather than the inside, but it was still a little gross.

So that's Sam at four months. He's a very happy kid most of the time, and always entertaining.

Sam had rolled over a few weeks ago, but this was the firs time he did it several times, and John got to see it! He is also laughing now, but we didn't quite get that. Enjoy!

The Pumpkin Patch

While my parents were here for their Fall break, my mom, Sam and I decided that we should visit the pumpkin patch. Sam had been so smiley all morning, and I think we wore him out. We did not get any smiles, but he still looks sweet sitting amoungst the pumpkins.

Things I have noticed....

As I was getting Sam out of bed this morning there were a few things I started to notice and thought I would share these fun things with you.

When Sam is in a good mood, it is almost impossible to change his diaper. The minute my arm crosses over him to get to the other side of the diaper he grabs it and tries to eat it. Then he thinks it's so funny that he starts kicking his legs. It took about 7 minutes to change his diaper, but he was such a happy little boy, that I didn't mind.

It's difficult to get a good picture of it when I'm the only one at home and my arms and hands are occupied. But the first picture is of Sam happy when he wakes up and the second shows that he likes to move around.

I next tried to put on his shirt. This too is also more of a chore when he is happy. Once the shirt goes over his head, his little hands find it and he immediately stuffs it in his mouth. He sucks on it and smiles and has a hard time letting go as I try to pull his arms through the sleeves. So his clean dry outfit does not stay clean and dry for long. The little wet mouth marks along the top of the shirt are still cute though.

Again it's hard to get a picture of that but here he is sucking on his hands through his blanket (and watching football).

Our little guy, again, when in a good mood, thinks it's funny to suck the boogies out of his nose. We'll go back and forth talking and cooing and smiling as I stick the syringe as far up as I can to get everything out. His eyes get wider as I let go of the bulbs sucking up whatever is there, and then he tries to laugh. Hopefully the fun will last until he can blow his nose by himself.

I say "tries to laugh" because while sometimes Sam can get a laugh out, it usually comes out as a cough. He gets so excited that he forgets how everything works and ends up coughing...with a smile...and then smiles at the end to make sure you know he knows it was funny.

Sometimes he smiles so big that his face scrunches up, his mouth is opened wide and he looks like he's about to explode with excitement. This picture comes pretty close, but believe it or not, his smile gets bigger!

Because Sam also finds the camera fascinating, he forgets to smile when it's around. He will be laughing (coughing), talking, smiling one minute, and as soon as he sees that camera, his eyes get big and he just stares. He's very good at staring.

He's so good, in fact, that at my Dr. appointment the other day the Doctor asked me if we fed him espresso and then tried to have a staring contest with him. Sam won hands down. I don't think he blinked for about 5 minutes. This reminded me of Bugsy from bedtime stories. Sam makes me laugh.

Sam even looks cute when he pouts. I have not captured this look on camera as far as I know, but our child can stick his bottom lip out so far and gives such a sad look that it often convinces me to take him out of his car seat or pick him up or whatever it is that I think he wants. Hopefully he will not remember this as he gets older, because it's just so cute that I don't think I could ever tell him no.

This is not his pouty look, but it is still pretty darn cute! Grandma thought it would be fun to put part of his costume on at the pumpkin patch, he did not agree.

So these are some things that I have noticed about my sweet little baby. I hope you enjoyed reading about it as much as I enjoyed telling.

I was sitting on the couch talking with Sam this morning and was simply full of joy and gratitude for this new little person in our lives. His favorite time to talk is in the morning. I come in to get him in the morning and if he's not starving, I'm greeted by a huge smile. We talk, he eats, we talk some more and I am just in love with this little guy. One of my favorite things about him is that he seems to always be looking around taking things in. Since his first week of life, he's been giving us these wide eyed looks, like he just can't take it in all at once. I thought I would share this look with you. He's grown up quite a bit too! 10 1/2 weeks!!!!

BYU Lost

Even though BYU lost horribly, Sam and John had a good 'ole time sporting their BYU shirts. How cute is this picture! It's a good thing we took this picture before the game, because afterwards neither one were really in the mood to smile for a picture!




Sam couldn't be bothered in this picture because he was busy watching the current football game. John will be glad when he can start talking football with Sam. He's been practicing with me for a while! :-)

TRIATHALON
Last Saturday John participated in the Lake Jackson Triatholon Relay. Their team ended up being disqualified because the bike had a flat and Adam had to get a ride into town, but they had a good time and it was a good reason to start excercising.



John was the second 5K in the relay. He ran about a 7 min. mile throughout!

2 Months Old!

Our little Sam is growing up so fast! It seems like he has chunked up more since the last blog! He is now 9 lbs 15 oz., 22 1/2 in. long, and his head is 39 cm around! He's almost as big as his friends (born a week after him) were at 1 month! He's still little, but is catching up! Here's our little cutie in his newest outfit, thanks to Grandma Roberts, and I believe at the request of Great Grandma and Grandpa Ker. And then there are just some cute pictures of him!

We woke him up getting out of the carseat, so needless to say he wasn't too happy about it!

At church one of the speakers told us to find out what our children like doing and do it with them...John didn't need to be told twice. Sam looks like he's enjoying it too!

We are truly blessed

We had the best weekend! We have been so blessed to have Sam in our lives, and blessed to have such a wonderful loving family! My parents came on Friday and we had a great time hanging out. John's family got in Saturday afternoon. We went to the beach and had some more good times. The Cougars beat the Sooners (our heart goes out to Bradford). We blessed Sam on Sunday and it was a wonderful experience having nearly all our family there. Diana, Charlie and Vincent came down as well for the blessing, and it was amazing to me how much this little guy is loved.

We are so greatly for all those who have been so supportive of us through the last several years, and are greatful for the love we have experienced through our wonderful families. We are truly blessed.

6 weeks old!

Sam went had his one month check up about 2 weeks ago and the Dr. told us he has grown! He's has gone from about 18 in. (we are not so sure that was accurate) to 20 1/2 inches! He also went from 5 lbs. 13 oz. that he weighed at one week to 7 lbs. 5 oz. We hope this has increased since then, and I will hopefully update on time next time. :-)

One of Sam's newest accompliments is smiling! Dad got the first gummy grins, but since then he has started smiling a lot! He has to be the cutest thing when he's not smiling, but when he does, it just puts him over the top!!!

This is the gummy smiles dad got for the first few days. He gets pretty excited and his daddy knows how to keep it going till it gets this big. It's pretty darn cute.

Sam was waking up from a nap in his swing and he was in a good mood. He looks like he was having fun doesn't he? :-)

Grandma Roberts bought him this cute little church outfit which we thought he might be too big for, but it fits great! We got this picture right before he made a mess of his pants and the outfit. Hence the surprised look on his face. You can also tell how much he has grown in the picture. He used to barely fit into the bouncer, now he fits quite nicely.

We thought this would be a good picture because this is a look we get quite frequently. We could have a whole album of this wide eyed look. He's always looking around so we know he's going to be smart. (I'm not bias at all!)

As you can see Sam is holding his head up better now and really enjoys this quality time with his dad.

We've tried to give Sam lots of tummy time, but usually he just likes to try to eat the blanket. Or like here, he finds a nice comfy spot and just chills. He's such a good baby, and most of the time is very content and happy. As long as he is fed when he's hungry and gets to sleep when he's tired, he's great!

Sam likes to take baths. He doesn't like getting undressed before, and getting dressed again after, but he like to sit in his little tub. He also likes to suck the water off his hands. He makes a cute little duck.

We took Sam for a walk a few weeks back in his fancy stroller, but had to turn around and get his carseat stroller because he was falling out of this one. We thought it was pretty funny. You can see how skinny his legs are here. He's definitely grown!!!!
